How to Shop for Dietary Restricted Groceries and Still Save Money

My friend Tara wrote a post about “Saving Money on Groceries when you have Dietary Restrictions, and I realized I have never written a post on that myself! My sister has one and my daughter has one, so this is a post I should have already written!

Now you all know what my suggestion is to anyone who wants to be frugal is to start clipping and printing coupons to save on your groceries! The same suggestion goes to anyone who has said they want to be frugal with their diet restrictions, but find it hard to save on their groceries. Yes I know you are thinking “but that’s crazy some of these products are expensive”………..just read on and you’ll see how to start saving, where you can save and what you can save on. You can also read my articles on Never Pay Retail

1). Learn how to work the deals at the drug stores for body wash, deodorant, make up, paper products, toothpaste, etc! Please read CVS 101 If you spend over $40 a month on these products, using coupons and learning how to work the CVS and other drug store deals will help you bring that down to about $15 or less! This will free up $30 or more to put towards your specific grocery needs.

2) Walmart and Target are 2 inexpensive stores compared to Winn Dixie. So I shop Walmart for all my deals. (Target won’t open for another week!) Both stores price match store sales! Using a coupon at Walmart will sometimes get an item for nearly free or totally free + an overage! Using coupons at Target can do the same thing. If you have a manufacturer coupon + there is a Target coupon, you can stack those coupons and snag the item for next to nothing!

3) If you have a specific company you like, write to them and tell them how much you like their product. Most companies do respond by sending coupons. You can also write and ask if the company has a newsletter you can sign up for so you can receive coupons their coupons.

4) Shop Amazon!

Did you know if you have dietary restrictions, you can purchase some food on Amazon! I personally find it amazing how much they actually have that you probably won’t find in any store! Vegan Foods, Diabetic Foods, Gluten FREE foods , Diet Foods, I’m considering the Vegan Black Bean with Lime soup! That just sounds so good! YUM!

To check the best value on Amazon, take the quantity and divide by the price to get the single price and compare it to the price in the store. Amazon does provide free shipping on some items if you spend $25 or more!

2 ways you may be able to get these items free is via Swagbucks and/or Crowdtap!

Swagbucks is a search engine (like google and yahoo) that pays you bucks for searching and you cash in those bucks for $5 Amazon gift card or other payments.

Crowdtap is Crowdtap is a website that will reward you for giving input on various brands and products

If you are on a Gluten FREE diet you may also want to check out these companies:

Paper Products You Should Never Pay Full Price For

This weeks list of items you should never pay full price for consist of Paper Products. I do purchase some of these items at the Dollar Tree, but if I have a coupon, I check the deals first! I always use a coupon and sale to get them for the best price!

Foam & Paper Plates $1 or Less
You can purchase Foam and Paper Plates at the Dollar Tree for $1. You can also get deals on Chinette Plates when there is a good sale paired with a coupon.

Kleenex
Kleenex is usually priced around $.99. If you have a $1/3 coupon, the final price would be $1.97 or $.66 a box! The key to finding out if it’s a good deal is to take the price, subtract the coupon value and then divide by 3.

Paper Towels
This depends on the size of the package you are buying. I purchase single rolls, double rolls and 6 packs all depending on the sale and the coupon value.  EX: Walgreens had 6 pk of Scott Naturals Paper Towels on sale $5, they also had an in ad coupon for $1 off = $4 for the 6 pk, but I had a $1.50 off a 6 pk, making it $2.50 a 6 pk (purchased 2) or $.42 per roll!

Toilet Paper
There are always sales on Scotts 1000 count Tissue paper (brand I use), Scotts Naturals, Charmin and other brands. There are also coupons always available! I always get the Scotts on sale for $6.99 (it’s nice when I can find a coupon for it) making the price per roll $.58!
Here’s a tip for other brands:
Look at the package for the square feet. Take the decimal point, and move it over 2 places to the left. You need to spend less than that number.  For example: Scotts 1000 sheets 12 pack is the same as 1257.6 sq ft. I move the decimal point over 2 spaces to the left. I want to pay less than $12.57 and I buy it for $6.99!

Remember, prices that work for others may not work for you. To help yourself and your family, create a price book of what you buy and go from there. As long as you are saving your family money and moving toward your goal, that’s all that matters.

Household Products You Should Never Pay Full Price For

This weeks list of items you should never pay full price for consist of Household items. I do purchase some items at the dollar tree if I’m in dire need of them, other than that, I always use a coupon and sale to get them for the best price!

Dish Soap 9.5 oz bottles ~ FREE – .50
P&G regularly puts out .50 coupons for Dawn hand renewal. CVS and Walgreens usually have the Dawn Hand Renewal on sale for $.97-$.99, use the $.50 coupon making the out of pocket price less that $.50 + tax. They also put out $1 off Gain Dish Detergent, which is $.97 at Walmart = FREE! You can also get Palmolive fairly inexpensive too!

Hand Soap FREE ~ .75
Hand soap coupons come out once every 2 months or so. They are usually for $.35 off. Pair this coupon with a 10 for $10 sale and you will walk away with a $.75 bottle of hand soap!

Dryer sheets ~ Free – $1
I love finding coupons on dryer sheets! A $1 off Gain Fabric Sheets coupon makes the 40 count box $.87 at Walmart. Nice price for stockpiling! You can also find $.75 off snuggle Fabric Sheets and of course $.50 off Bounce! Use these coupons on the smallest number to get the best deal! Best stores to try are Walmart and Dollar General! If these Dryer sheets are on sale for B1G1, be sure to have 2 coupons to use!

Laundry Detergent ~ Free – $2
I usually buy my laundry detergent on sale or B1G1 sale. There are usually $1 – $1.50 off on All detergent, $1 off Tide Detergent, $1 off Purex and once in a while you’ll see $3 off Purex Laundry Detergent. Wisk usually has a $2 coupon which would make them $2.97. I recently found out that Walmart and Walgreens has the small bottle of Wisk for $.99, if the $2 off coupon has no exclusions, you can use that coupon and get $1 in overage! Tide $1 off coupons usually do not have any exclusions on them, Walmart has Tide Trial Size for $.97,in their trial size bins = FREE Tide detergent!

ZipLoc Baggies ~ Free – $1
I usually purchase these at the Dollar Tree for $1. When there is a coupon, it’s usually for $1.50 off 2. So I wait for a B1G1 sale and get the zip loc bags 2 for $1.84!

Air Fresheners ~ FREE – $1
I have seen several Renuzit Air Freshener coupons for $1 off, making them FREE!

Household Cleaners ~ FREE – $2
You should never spend over $1 for your basic household cleaners. This includes bottles of Lysol, Comet, Mr. Clean, Seventh Generation, Scrubbing Bubbles, and Febreze. I usually purchase Comet at the dollar tree.

This completes our list items you can buy for FREE or inexpensively for today. I will be adding more to the list every week.
