Extreme Couponing – What The Show Doesn’t Tell You!

1. It Takes Time to Coupon
It takes hours of planning to take a $2,000 bill and get it down to $100. Extreme couponing like you see on the TLC show is a part-time or even full-time job in regards to the hours put in.

2. Extreme Couponing Isn’t for Everyone
The average person won’t put in all the time to be an extreme couponer. But if the show got you excited that’s great! Using coupons will save you money. Start off with a goal of saving 10% to 20% off your grocery bill. As you learn the tricks of couponing you can work on increasing your savings, or find a happy medium where you save plenty but don’t go to the extreme to use every coupon.

3. Extreme Couponers DO Pay for Groceries
You can’t live off extreme couponing. (Unless you want to eat cereal and processed foods all the time). Most coupons aren’t for whole foods. The majority of coupons are for processed foods. Coupons for meats, milk, and fresh produce are rare (though they do happen sometimes, but you can’t count on these coupons regularly). Therefore, even the most extreme of coupon shoppers will still have to pay for these basic necessities to maintain a healthy diet.

4. Free Groceries Aren’t “Free”
It costs couponers more than the $100 for that $2,000 in groceries. In addition to the time investment, many use clipping services which do charge a fee per coupon. That $2,000 grocery shopping trip could cost them as much as 50 cents per coupon but as little as 2 cents. Lets say they got 1,000 items for $2,000. If they paid 10 cents a coupon for 1,000 items that’s an additional 100 dollars in expense. So really it was $200 spent out-of-pocket. Sure, that’s still amazing, but it costs twice as much as what you see on the show.

5. Store Policies Vary
Stores have different coupon policies – the way coupons were allowed at the store on the show may not be the same at your local store, even if it is the same “brand” of store. Some will double or triple coupons, some don’t. Some limit the number of “like coupons,” some don’t. Some will even limit the number of coupons per transaction. Find out your local store’s coupon policy before shopping with coupons. Don’t assume just because you saw it on TV that you can do it too.

6. Extremely Entertaining
The Show is EXTREME couponing…. This isn’t about Saving Sally going to the store and getting $100 in groceries for $55… thats not exciting TV… But that would be exciting for you if you’re trying to budget for your family and pinch pennies. You don’t have to coupon to the extreme to get the savings you need to make the most of your budget.

Tonight On TLC “Extreme Couponing” Series Airs at 8PM CST

The Learning Channel (TLC) has decided to make a show on couponing! Tonight there are 2, 1/2 hour shows of “Extreme Couponing” starting at 8 pm CST, so if you are setting your DVR, set it from 8 – 9PM CST. Of course, I have set the DVR so I can watch it on a later date, (interfers with American Idol and Criminal Minds).

This show was the topic of a group I am in last week and I have listed a few of what was discussed including some one mentioning that they are cheating the system……..No they aren’t! There is NO system and NO law preventing anyone from having more than 1 coupon per item!

A few things to remember:
 * This is a TV Show and not everything is as it seems! The producers of TLC have asked the participants to go “extreme” for effect, to benefit their ratings!

 * We should NOT compare ourselves to this show, but try to learn from it. Couponing is a lesson to be learned!

 * Everyone has to make their decisions about couponing and stockpiling based on their needs, income, dietary restrictions, etc. Not everyone will be able to save or stockpile as much as the other person, but it should however be a little fun to see what you can do!

 * Coupons are regional as well as store sales……some stores double and triple coupons, while other parts of the country stores do not double or triple them (I am in a state that does not) so some of the participants in the show may have advantages that we may not have! So lets make a pledge not to compare ourselves!

There are a few benefits to this show though! If you are new to couponing or trying to get better at it, pay attention to how they

  • plan their shopping trips
  • organize their coupons
  • What they use to store their coupons in
  • Possibly get a few stockpiling tips, etc.

Personally I only stockpile for about 2-4 months on a few things, the non-expiration things like deodorants, I stockpile when I have high value coupons and room. I eat from the pantry and freezers when I have stockpiled them.

Will you be watching the new series??

These are all great line up of Christmas movies for ABC Family. Thanks ABC Family for adding more Christmas movies and letting us know your 25 Days of Christmas Schedule for this year 2010.  My only suggestion for 2011 would be to put another Christmas movie instead of running back to back of the same movie.
