Low Income Home Energy and Weatherization Assistance Programs

Summer is finally here and that means turning on the Air Conditioners and Ceiling fans especially here in the south! Every year there are people who get overwhelmed with their electricity bills. Here in the south, the Electric company will shut you down if it’s COLD or HOT out, it doesn’t matter! However, there is a low income home energy and weatherization assistance programs for those who qualify.

What is the LIHEAP Program?
The LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a federally funded program that provides support to needy low-income households for utility bill payments. Federal funds are distributed to each state and the individual states then administer the program and funds distribution. LIHEAP pays partial energy bills for eligible families.

What is the WAP Program?
WAP, or the Weatherization Assistance Program was created in 1978 to help low income families reduce their energy costs. The WAP program provides for home improvement in the form of insulating walls and ceilings, repairing broken windows, caulking and weather proofing and by replacing inefficient heating and cooling appliances.

The program usually makes payments directly to your local utility company. Because the LIHEAP program provides support on a first come-first serve basis, it is important to apply as early as possible as some states provide no further support once their federal funding has run out.
